An Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA) is a small business group health alternative. Since their introduction in 2020, ICHRAs have rapidly grown in popularity as more and more employers find rising insurance rates unaffordable.

With an ICHRA, the employer decides on a set pretax contribution to give to each employee to shop for their own health insurance plan (on Marketplace or off). Any remaining premium is covered by the employee. This keeps costs predictable and can offer significant savings for many small businesses. Employees benefit by being able to choose the specific health plan that is best for them.
